Pasta Prices Are Boiling: What the New U.S. Tariff Means

Did you know if you are in the US your favourite Italian pasta could soon cost a lot more in the U.S.? Recent trade decisions are creating ripples all the way from Rome to your pantry.

What Happened

The U.S. Department of Commerce confirmed new anti-dumping duties on Italian pasta producers like Garofalo, Rummo, and La Molisana. These companies are accused of selling pasta below “fair value” in the U.S. market.

The Numbers

  • New duties: Up to 92%
  • Existing EU food tariff: 15%
  • Total potential import tariff: ~107%

In plain terms, imported pasta could nearly double in cost, affecting both retail shelves and restaurant menus.

Reaction from Italy

Italian industry groups warn that the measure is disproportionate, putting the “Made in Italy” food sector at risk. Some exporters have even suggested they may suspend U.S. sales entirely.

What It Means for Consumers

  • Expect higher prices for authentic Italian pasta.
  • Fewer imported brands may be available on U.S. shelves.
  • Domestic pasta producers might fill the gap, but the taste and texture of traditional Italian pasta could come at a premium.

Why Trade Matters

While this tariff story shows the challenges of trade, it’s important to remember the bigger picture: trade is good for consumers, businesses, and economies.

  • Variety & choice: Trade allows us to enjoy foods, products, and services from all over the world.
  • Innovation & competition: Companies improve quality and efficiency to compete globally.
  • Economic growth: Exports create jobs, investment, and opportunity — while imports give consumers more options at competitive prices.
  • Global cooperation: Trade fosters relationships between countries, encouraging diplomacy and shared prosperity.

Even when tariffs or trade disputes make headlines, the principle of open, fair trade continues to benefit people everywhere — yes, even at your dinner table.
